FLEX Extra

What is EXTRA?

Extra is a progressive player program designed for those who have the desire and abilities to enhance their soccer development and experience, while retaining the spirit of AYSO and embracing its Six Philosophies:

Everyone plays
Balanced teams
Open registration
Positive coaching
Good sportsmanship
Player development

The Extra program is run at the Section level (greater Orange County) with teams formed at the Regional (local) level. For general information about the FLEX Extra program, please see the Section and National websites. FLEX Extra demands a high level of coach and player commitment to training. It is expected that players make an effort to be at 90% of games and practices. In exchange for this commitment, players receive the opportunity to participate in a very competitive soccer program where they are guaranteed 50% play time, lower costs than Club, and playing on teams with their Laguna Beach friends.

Teams will play other Extra teams throughout Orange County. About half of the games are home games and half away games - so there will be travel. The season runs parallel to the primary AYSO soccer season. Thus Extra players cannot play on a primary AYSO team, or on another Club team, at the same time.

Extra players must be registered with AYSO for the subsequent Fall season prior to attending a tryout. (Click on the button above for more info and links.) Players not making an Extra team will be placed on a primary AYSO team. There are no refunds once registered.

Please send any questions to the Extra Coordinator at extra@ayso86.org.

How are Teams Formed?

Teams are formed by an open tryout process. Each team will have a minumum of two tryout sessions, and candidates are encouraged to try out for both, as the best of the two scores will be what's used. At the tryout, independent evaluators will score players in the following categories:

Functional Attacking
Functional Defending
Technical
Tactical

Players must tryout at least once for the team for which they want to be considered. It is strongly encouraged that players tryout for the team that their birth date falls under. Should a player want to be considered for playing up, they will need to attend the older tryout as well. Due to the very competitive nature of the program, rarely do players playing up make an older team. Additional questions can be sent to extra@ayso86.org .

Once tryouts are complete and evaluations are tallied, teams will be formed by the coaches and AYSO staff. It will be the goal of each team to communicate to the player families within 30 days after the second tryout.

How are Coaches Selected?

Coaches wishing to coach an Extra team should start by contacting the Extra coordinator at extra@ayso86.org

Coaches need to have prior coaching experience, and by the time the season starts, need to have coach training one level above their current age division, as well as basic referee training. The same requirements are necessary for Assistant Coaches.

Coaches must also be Safe Haven certified, have a current volunteer form completed, and be in good standing with AYSO.

Tryout Dates for the Fall Season:

Tryout dates as well as birth date eligibility can be found by clicking on the button above. All players must be registered for the Fall season, as well as pre-registered for the tryouts. All this is accessible from the above button.

At the tryout, a parent or guardian must sign a medical release form.
