FLEX Extra

What is EXTRA?

**2022 EXTRA PLAYER TRYOUT REGISTRATION FORM**

EXTRA is a progressive player program designed for those who have the desire and abilities to enhance their soccer development and experience, while retaining the spirit of AYSO and embracing its Six Philosophies:

Everyone plays Balanced teams  • Open registration  • Positive coaching  • Good sportsmanship  • Player development

The EXTRA program is run at the Section level (Orange and Southern LA Counties) with teams formed at the Regional (local) level. For general information about the EXTRA program, please see the Section 11 website. EXTRA demands a high level of coach and player commitment to training. It is expected that players make an effort to be at 90% of games and practices. In exchange for this commitment, players receive the opportunity to participate in a very competitive soccer program where they are guaranteed 50% play time, lower costs than Club, and playing on teams with their Laguna Beach friends.

Teams play other EXTRA teams throughout Orange and South LA Counties. About half of the games are home games and half away games - so there will be travel. The season runs parallel to the primary AYSO soccer seasons but runs teams stay together for the duration of the calendar year. Thus EXTRA players cannot play on a primary AYSO team, or on another Club team, at the same time.

Extra players must be registered with AYSO to attending a tryout.  Tryout have no cost associated with them except for the standard AYSO National player fee that all registrants must pay yearly (typically around $20 but subject to change without notice).  (Click on the above tryout link for more info.) Players that are not selected for an EXTRA team are placed on primary/core AYSO teams.  There are no refunds once registered.

Please send any questions to the EXTRA Coordinator at [email protected].

How are Teams Formed?

Teams are formed by an open tryout process. Each team will have a minimum of two tryout sessions, and candidates are encouraged to try out for both, as the best of the two scores is used. At tryouts, independent evaluators score players in the following categories:

Defending • Attacking • Speed • Ball Control •  Game Knowledge • Attitude

We also need EVALUATORS for the day of tryouts, ideal candidates are parents who are current and former coaches and/or former club or college level players who can volunteer for the day. If interested and able, please contact the EXTRA Coordinator at [email protected].

Players must tryout at least once for the team for which they want to be considered. It is strongly encouraged that players tryout for the team that their birth date falls under. Should a player want to be considered for playing up, they will need to attend the older tryout as well. Due to the very competitive nature of the program, rarely do players playing up make an older team.

Once tryouts are complete and evaluations are tallied, teams are formed by the coaches and AYSO staff. It is the goal of each team to communicate to the player families within 30 days after the second tryout.

How are Coaches Selected?

Coaches wishing to coach an Extra team should start by contacting the Extra coordinator at [email protected].

Coaches need to have prior coaching experience, and by the time the season starts, need to have coach training one level above their current age division, as well as basic referee training. The same requirements are necessary for Assistant Coaches.

Coaches must also be Safe Haven certified, have taken Concussion Awareness training, have a current volunteer form completed, and be in good standing with AYSO.

Season Length and Playing Circuits

The EXTRA Teams play both the Spring and Fall seasons, typically starting earlier than the recreational program teams.  Our EXTRA program is administered at the Section level with a gaming circuit that includes AYSO Areas Z, E, K, L, and Q (Orange and South LA counties).  Older divisions may play teams ranging from Cypress to San Clemente. In the lower age divisions like U9, games typically take place in South Orange County (Lake Forest, Laguna Hills, Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita).

Cost of Program

The Registration Fees for EXTRA teams from Laguna Beach pay the standard team and/or player fees that other standard teams play for the Spring and Fall Primary programs.  However, custom uniforms/equipment, exclusive training clinics, and additional tournament entry fees are applicable to EXTRA teams.  Spring and Fall are typically between $150-$200 each plus the "extra" training, uniforms, tournaments, you can expect another approximately $500 per season, which is still a fraction of the cost of typical Club programs.
